As part of the Twin Cities with adjoining Minneapolis, they combine to form the Minneapolis-Saint Paul metropolitan area which supports over 3.6 million residents. Most of Saint Paul is located on the north bank of the Mississippi River. Saint Paul is the county seat of the heavily-inhabited Ramsey County.
Native American settlements brought trade and transportation to the area historically. The community of the city of Saint Paul began at the existing Lambert's Landing. It was called Pig's Eye after a local tavern owner named Pierre "Pig's Eye" Parrant. The very first Catholic pastor to come to the area, Fr. Lucien Galtier, established the Log Chapel of Saint Paul. Soon after, the settlement was renamed Saint Paul. The location of the Log Chapel later became the site of the Cathedral of Saint Paul.
The city was chosen in the year 1849 to be the Minnesota Territory capital. The city of Saint Paul is home to many important institutions as it is the state capital and center to much political activity. Saint Paul attracts tourists from the region to the Xcel Energy Center, a multi-purpose venue for sports and entertainment. The city of Saint Paul is home of the Minnesota Wild Hockey Club. The Science Museum of Minnesota is the most popular museum in the Upper Midwest.
The twin cities have a higher literacy rates as opposed to the national average. In 2007, Saint Paul actually saw an increase in the distribution of Sunday Newspapers. It was the only city with a population of at least 250,000 to do so.
The head office of Lawson Software, Gander Mountain, Ecolab and other key companies are situated here. Ecolab is a chemical and cleaning product company, ranked during the year 2008 as the 8th best place to work in the Twin Cites (for companies with 1,000 employees who work full time). Lawson Software is a support and business software corporation. Gander Mountain is a huge retailer of sporting goods. Although 3M Company is not located in the city, many Saint Paul people work there. 3M hires 16,000 people throughout the state. St. Jude Medical, a manufacturer of medical devices, is situated within Little Canada, a suburb of the Twin Cities.
Saint Paul once featured the Twin Cities Assembly Plant of Ford Motor Company which just closed in December 2011. This plant was located in Highland Park along the Mississippi River. Nearly all (82%) of Minneapolis-Saint Paul-Bloomington area inhabitants are working in the private sector.
